Summary

Darkhan City is the second largest city in Mongolia with an urban population of 72,000, of which an estimated 40 percent live in ger areas. The city lies in Darkhan-Uul Aimag Province, Mongolia’s third largest province with a registered population of 92,000. Poverty incidence is significant at 27% city-wide and 44% in ger areas. The city is undergoing a significant urban transition, but the data needed to improve analysis and planning is often not available and when it is available it is generally not of the required quality. Accurate geospatial information is needed to guide planning for expanding service needs.

Goals

The overall goal of the project is to support local capacity for geospatial data collection and create data in support of evidence-based urban planning. This project aims to (i) strengthen the capacity of local teachers, professors, and students to develop a geospatial database; (ii) create a database of key indicators for solid waste management; and iii) support the use of data to inform urban planning and fact-based decision-making with an initial focus on solid waste.
